Today is the 27th Anniversary of Spitak Earthquake

On December 7, the RA Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan, accompanied by the RA Minister of Territorial Administration and Emergency Situations Armen Yeritsyan, visited Gyumri.

At 11:41, the representatives of regional and municipal authorities and guests laid flowers at the statue dedicated to the victims of the earthquake. Then a memorial service was held at Holy Savior Church by Father Stephen ordained priest.

The devastating earthquake in the north of Armenia on December 7, 1988 razed to the ground a number of settlements in a few seconds, leaving dozens of thousands of people under the ruins and homeless. Spitak earthquake covered an area of about 40 percent.

According to official data, the devastating earthquake claimed more than 25 thousand lives, 20 large and small cities were destroyed, including Spitak, Gyumri, Vanadzor and Stepanavan.

About 350 villages were affected, 58 of which were destroyed completely.
